Urgent Care Q & A

by Alan Horlick, DDS

Occasions come up when you or a member of your household will be in need of urgent care for your oral health. If you have a serious concern that needs to be addressed, a dentist can take care of it right away.

When Do I Need Urgent Care?

You need to go to the dentist right away if you have a dental emergency, which could include any problem going on with your teeth or gums that need to be fixed immediately or if a permanent tooth is knocked out. If you are unsure if your situation is an emergency, you should call your dental office and check whether you should come in immediately. If you avoid taking care of a dental emergency, it could worsen and result in continuing problems and complications.

What Kinds of Dental Problems Constitute an Emergency?

Emergency treatment should be sought if a tooth is knocked out or broken. While small chips or fractures might be able to wait, urgent care is necessary when you suffer a serious break or crack, a nerve or nerves are damaged, or the tooth comes out. You should also call for urgent treatment if you have severe mouth pain that is preventing normal speech or eating.

How Does a Dental Emergency Happen?

You might need quick care for your mouth because you bit into a piece of food that damaged your teeth or gums. Or the problem could be caused by some injury or trauma, caused by falling, a car accident or a sports game.

What Should I Do if My Tooth Comes Out?

When a tooth knocked out due to trauma or injury, you will need to visit the dentist immediately to improve the chances of saving the tooth. Do not put the tooth in water or rinse it off. Without touching the root, try to place the tooth back in its socket. Touching the root could cause damage making it impossible to save. If you cannot place the tooth back into the socket, nestle it between your cheek and gums. If that is also not an option, you may place the tooth in a glass of milk.
